Designed primarily for appearance, with some heat output as a possible bonus, vented gas log sets can be installed in most woodburning fireplaces to give the appearance of a woodburning fire. Once installed, they can be operated at the flick of a switch, touch of a button or on a thermostat. When operating, the damper of the fireplace should be open to allow fumes to escape up the chimney and this usually result in a considerable heat loss and low heating efficiency. |

Also know as ventless, non-vented or house-vented, vent free gas log sets provide both the appearance of a woodburning fire and a high heat output and efficiency. As with vented log sets, they are simple, clean and easy to operate. But since they can be operated with the fireplace damper closed, there is very little heat loss. They are recommended for occasional use for supplemental heat - e.g., while watching TV in the venting - rather than serious heating. Although there are occasional problems with odors and humidity, they can be a very useful appliance in the right application. |
